REMEMBERING

Through memorials, parades and moments of individual reflection Gwent continues to remember those whose lives were taken.

For many years there were parades to mark the decimation of the 1st and 3rd Mons on 8th May 1915.  A service at the 3rd Mons cenotaph in Abergavenny still takes place on the Saturday following 8th May.

Details of war memorials in Gwent can be found in the two volumes of First World War Graves and Memorials in Gwent by Ray Westlake (Wharncliffe Books 2001 and 2002).

In addition to memorials within the county, the 1st Mons are commemorated through a window at St George’s Church, Ypres and a battalion memorial at Frezenberg, close to the spot where the battalion was decimated on 8th May 1915.
